Hove RFC Colts V JRFC Saltgate Colts
Hove RFC Colts 31 - 17 JRFC Saltgate Colts
Match Report
At the start of the season the management and Coaching Team committed to ensuring that all Colts players who turned up for training would get a run-out in at least one league match.
This was the third league match for Jersey who made several changes to the side that played in their last match.
Opponents Hove were 3rd in the league table and have always proved a very physical side.
The game played out as expected as both sides ripped into each other from the off and although it was a physical contest it was played in the right spirit.
It took 15 minutes of to and fro before Hove managed to put a score on the board.
Jersey were straight back at them and into the Hove 22 where they were awarded the put in at a scrum. Jersey No.8 George Roberts secured the ball and took it over to score. Fullback Morris Coutillard took the kick and gained a couple of extra points for Jersey.
Hove managed to score the next two tries putting them 17-7 ahead at the halftime whistle.
At the restart Hove went over for another try, but Jersey were quick to respond with a beautiful individual run by Coutillard that saw him score in the corner.
Jenson Russel went over to score Jersey’s 3rd try.
The see-saw nature of the match continued. There was some slick play through the Jersey backs following some powerful work from the pack which kept the home side on the defence.
Jersey displayed good line speed which put pressure on the Hove defence and resulted in the latter receiving two yellow cards.
In the latter stages Hove went over two more times, putting the score at 31-17 to them at the final whistle. Colts Coach Tim Gray said “Hove deserve credit for the way they brought the game to us, using some big powerful players to break the Jersey line.
The boys certainly maintained the pressure in the second half and even when we went behind we always looked dangerous. The whole team showed a lot of character and took the game to Hove both physically and tactically.
They got stuck in and gave them a real challenge. We’ll get back to training on Tuesday and build on today, ready for our next game against Worthing” (08/12/24) As always the team remain grateful for the ongoing support of their sponsors SALTGATE
