Match Report

Guernsey were JRFC U15s penultimate opposition last Sunday in a top of the table shootout that kept the home crowd on the edge of their seats to the very end.
Jersey started well with Jacob Carter busting through the visitor’s defence on 2 mins to touchdown out on the left 5–0. Guernsey responded quickly when their 14 went over on 5 mins 5-5.
The game settled with both sides searching for openings - Guernsey’s set piece, especially the scrum causing serious problems for the home side with the home sides handling & desire to get the ball wide looking the most likely way to the try line. However, it was after some sustained pressure by the forwards deep on right that the referee awarded Jersey a penalty try, 12-5.
Guernsey then appeared to be starting to gain the upper hand with some strong forward carries and quick ball out to the backs with Jersey having work hard, frequently scrambling to keep them out. Guernsey eventually got over the line on 28 mins half-time, 12-10.
The rest seemed to suit Jersey as they came quickly at the start of the second period with the pacey Lennon Cummins scoring wide left on 35 mins, 17-10.
Again, Guernsey responded with in 5 mins to level, 17-17. Jersey’s turn to respond with Aphonso Correia forcing his way over after a great kick chase from the restart put some pressure on the Guernsey defence, 42 mins, 22-17.
Once more Guernsey looked like they were gaining momentum with their no. 8 causing problems with his forging runs into Jersey territory – one such carry creating enough space for the visitors to score just to left of the posts on 50 mins making the conversion easy, 22-24.
It looked like the Sarnians were going to hang on but for one last desperate drive forward by Jersey who, on 60 mins, were awarded a penalty 25 mtrs out in the middle of the pitch.
Ryan Allen-Le Bas, facing real pressure after not managing a successful conversion all game, stepped up and slotted it down the middle with the last kick of the game. A real ding dong of a game that sets up Junior Siam contest at the end of April with some real meaning.
