Heathfield V Jersey U16 Boys

The U16's travelled to Heathfield for their first game of the season which was to be played in conditions that can only be described as filthy. A day for the forwards saw Jersey defending inside their 22 for the opening minutes, some great tackling and good clearance kicking saw them gain territory. Good work at the breakdown won Jersey a penalty which they kicked to the corner. From the line out a maul was formed and the forwards kept driving to break the doors down, Alex Powell picking and going over for the first try, Lyle Pritchard adding the conversion, 7 nil. Heathfield came back with some strong running but excellent tackling from the backs ensured that forward progress was difficult. Again Jersey kicked well out of hand to gain field position and set up camp on the Heathfield try line. A short ball to Ollie Houghton saw him dive over for the second score, 12 nil at half time.

With the conditions making it tough Jersey created opportunities with good kicking, but we're unable to convert. Heathfield upped the tempo and physicality and started to pressure the Jersey defence, with their no 8 powering through to score a converted try, 12 7. A yellow card to Jersey with 10 minutes to go meant a difficult finish and Heathfield took advantage, piling on the pressure. This looked to have paid off as they broke through and crossed the line, but Ollie Houghton played his joker and held the ball up. Jersey won the ball from the ensuing scrum and ran down the clock to take the win 12 7. Cole Gueno was awarded player of the match for Jersey after a tireless display.
