Jersey U16 Boys V Worthing
Jersey U16 Boys 22 - 20 Worthing
Match Report
This was, using the old sporting cliche a game of two halves.
Due to a strong wind blowing the length of the pitch, the side that could use this wind to their advantage would ultimately win the game.
Worthing won the toss and started by playing into the wind. Jersey received the kick off and after a bit of back and forth from both sides, Jersey, like building with a Lego set started putting the bricks of the forwards pick and gos together and made headway into the Worthing half, with the wind behind them Louis Pallant playing at fly half went for a drop goal which was successful. An early score to Jersey. Worthing came back strong and after some fine play from their forwards and good defence from Jersey holding Worthing out for a period of time, Worthing breached Jersey line and scored a try, however the conversion was unsuccessful.
Jersey started to use the wind to their advantage and also started to play with a bit more structure and following some good handling by both the backs and forwards, a clever kick over the Worthing defence resulted in a try for Luke Cadoret, which was not converted.
On the restart after this try, Jersey pressed forward and after a period of play of getting into Worthing’s half and a few turn overs and knock on’s, Jersey gained some momentum and using their forwards created a short range try for Cole Gueno near the posts, which Louis Pallant duly converted.
Jersey then enjoyed a milky period of high ball retention and yield and following a clever cross field kick which earnt Jersey a penalty as all Worthing could do was hit the ball out into touch, resulted in a try of Lyle Pritchard with his quick thinking and reaction to the referee awarding Jersey the penalty. This try was only a few metres in from the touch line and given the weather conditions was amazingly converted by Louis Pallant. Half time soon came around and Jersey were leading 22-5.
With the wind behind them Worthing soon came back into the game and Jersey were to mount a good defensive period, but unfortunately a few players had a few lemonade moments and were being a bit silly and not thinking straight which resulted in a few penalties, a yellow card to Jersey and ultimately a penalty try.
Worthing were now playing with more confidence and resulted in another try for them which they failed to convert. the score was now 22-20 to Jersey. Jersey were under pressure and for long periods of time did not get out of their own 22, let alone their half. The last 10-15 minutes then resulted in a good defensive play by Jersey, accumulating in Jersey turning over the ball and using their forwards drove up the pitch to the Worthing 22 metre line where they won a penalty. Jersey opted for a kick at the posts which unfortunately missed, however Jersey were in the Worthing half and stayed pretty much there for the remainder of the game.
