M&Js FAQs

The rugby season begins in September and continues until the end of April.  We welcome new members throughout the season.  

Jersey Rugby Club, Rue des Landes, St Peter JE3 7BG (what3words fishes.thuds.hayrides)

• U6s, U7s and U8s - Sunday mornings between 9 and 10 am
• U9s, U10s and U11s – Sunday mornings between 9 and 10.30 am 
• U12s, U13s, U14s, Girls and Junior Mixed Touch – Sunday mornings between 10.30 am and 12
• U15s, U16s and Colts train on two evenings per week

Membership fees for 2023-24 are as follows:

• U6 – U11 inclusive and Junior Mixed Touch £100 per player
• U12 – Colts inclusive (Boys and Girls) £140 per player
• Discounts are applied for second and subsequent siblings

Membership fees, along with funding from sponsors, helps to provide all the kit and equipment we need to run the M&Js, subsidises travel to away games and ensures all our volunteers are properly trained.

However, as an inclusive club we firmly believe that cost should never be a barrier, so we have funding available to families who might struggle with the cost of membership fees, kit or travel. If you need help, speak to your squad Manager in confidence.

We will ask for contact details and whether your child has any medical or other issues that may affect their participation. Your data will be held securely and any personal details are held in accordance with applicable data protection legislation.

Rugby boots, comfortable clothing (without hoods or zips) and a bottle of water.  Layers are recommended for colder training days. Kit is available from our Kit Shop on Sunday mornings and we also have a second hand kit/boot exchange.

A mouth guard (or gumshield) is essential for everyone playing contact rugby.  For the younger age groups (U6s to U8s) who play Tag rugby and our Touch players, mouth guards are optional.  The Kit shop sells a range of rugby-approved mouth guards, alternatively contact your dentist.

Our tag rugby Squads (U6s, U7s and U8s) are mixed.

Girls and boys can play contact rugby together up to the end of U11s. 

We have a thriving Girls Squad which welcomes players up to the age of 18.

The RFU provides basic insurance cover for all registered players, including children http://englandrugbyinsurance.co.uk/  We recommend parents consider purchasing additional cover, particularly for older players travelling regularly to away fixtures, in case of delay or cancellation.

Each squad has at least one coach or manager who is RFU First Aid qualified and we have a dedicated First Aid team who are on hand for additional support during home games and Sunday morning training.

U12s – Colts play in the Sussex League competitions with games taking place both at home and in the UK.  

U9s - U11s will play festivals and friendly fixtures against schools and other clubs.

All age groups from U7s upwards will take part in the annual Junior Siam fixture which alternates each year between Jersey and Guernsey.

We regularly welcome visiting teams to Jersey for league and friendly fixtures.

Primary responsibility for selection rests with the squad Lead Coach, in consultation with their coaching team. Selection for competitive fixtures will take into account players’ attitude and attendance at training, as well as their ability on the field.   

The Siam Cup is the second oldest rugby trophy in the world, behind the Calcutta Cup, which is contested annually between England and Scotland. It was made in the early 1900’s in Siam (now Thailand) from silver coins and donated by a group of Channel Islanders, who were serving in the British Army at the time, as the prize for a rugby match between Jersey and Guernsey.  This tradition continues to this day, as the Siam Cup continues to be contested annually between the two Island teams, although the original trophy is now so valuable that it is kept in the Museum of Rugby at Twickenham - the trophy you will see presented on Siam Cup Day is a replica!

The Minis and Juniors has its own version of the Siam; Jersey and Guernsey play each other at all age groups as our season finale, which is undoubtedly the highlight of the playing calendar for both junior Island clubs.

Normally, yes! We only cancel training in the event of frozen pitches or a large amount of standing water.  If training is cancelled or moved to a different venue you will be contacted by your Squad Manager (usually via WhatApp). We also post updates on our Facebook page.
