Under 6 Mixed
Welcome to U6 Mixed Rugby
This is where our youngest players begin their exciting journey in the world of rugby! At this stage, we focus on introducing children aged 5 and 6 to the fundamentals of the sport in a fun, supportive, and safe environment. Through non-contact games, basic drills, and team-building activities, our coaches aim to foster a love for rugby while helping kids develop essential motor skills, coordination, and confidence. Whether it's their first time on the field or they're eager to learn more, the U6 rugby experience is all about enjoyment and growth.
Squad Information
When can I start Rugby?
To start in Under 6s in September players need to be 5 before the 31 August - ie going in to Year 1 at school.
Unfortunately we can't make any exceptions, but until your child is ready to join us, why not check out RugbyTots, who have option for children from the age of 2 and a half: Rugbytots - Fun Rugby Activities for Children and Toddlers
When and where does rugby training take place?
Training takes place on Sunday mornings from the beginning of September to the end of April, between 9 and 10am at the Rugby Club.
At present U6s will train on Pitch 2 which is adjacent to the Jersey Bowl carpark.
Please park in the Club carpark, NOT in Jersey Bowl.
Parents are welcome to stay and watch training - if you are not staying please ensure you are contactable on the number you provided on registration - if there are any changes please advise the squad manager.
Rugby Kit
Players will need the following:
- Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing with no hoods or zips. Layers are a good idea for colder days and gloves/beanie hats are fine too
- Studded boots (studs should be either full moulded or full metal - NO METAL TIPS)
- Named bottle of water
It is not essential, but should you wish to buy M&Js branded kit we have a range of items, including clothing, accessories and mouthguards available from
- our Shop on a Sunday morning (in the container between Pitches 2 and 4)
- JSSK at Quennevais Precinct
- online at Jersey Reds Minis & Juniors | Jersey Schools & Sports Kit (jssk.co.uk)
Mouthguards are not mandatory at this level as there is no contact, and the wearing of a mouthguard for tag rugby is a matter of parental choice.
What to expect
Above all, Rugby for our youngest players is FUN!
Rugby is an opportunity for children to run around outdoors and have a great time with their friends. At the first stage of the Minis and Juniors we aim to provide sessions which are:
• delivered in a safe, secure and enabling environment
• active, enjoyable, engaging and accessible for all children
• appropriate for the age and development of each child, appreciating the range of competencies that might exist within the group
• linked to the RFU’s Core Values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship
